Tumbling
The basis of all gymnastics starts on the floor
Handstand your way into floor skills!
Power Tumbling is a branch of Trampoline Sports, however it is the foundation of all gymnastics has. Whether you've got a beginner just starting out or a more experienced gymnast, dancer, acrobat, rhythmist or trampolinist on your hands; This class is able to enhance their skills through progressions and strength training.
Power tumbling is part of Trampoline Sports. In fact, Maryborough is one of the longest running trampoline programs in the State of Queensland, starting in 1963!
Power Tumbling:
- Develops confident body movement, both on and off the ground
- Builds strength and prepares the body for challenges in life
- Challenges the mind and body to reach new goals
- Develops posture and agility, including the ability to land safely
- Is conducted in safely equipped environments with accredited coaches
Sessions-
Check the timetable for days and sessions. Power tumbling is a great complementary class to all of our programs. caters for adults and children wanting to keep fit and train with their friends.
In 2024 - we are set to have beginners one Tuesdays, whilst our intermediate class is combined into the dance program on Saturdays.
Apparatus
In the power tumbling class the sprung or rod gymnastics floor are the most commonly used apparatus. However other equipment like springboards, beam, bars, ropes and trampolines are also used at times for strength, conditioning and soft surface ariel training.
At MGS we are very fortunate to have a well-equipped gym for tumbling with many pieces of equipment like Olympic trampolines, overhead bungee rig and tumble trampoline, which is great for learning skills and reducing impact on the whole body.
Pathways for Tumbling at Maryborough GymSports
Trampoline Sports is suitable for:
Children - the beginner starts in the level 1 beginner class. which is 60 minutes per session, once a week.
As the athlete moves up the levels or wants to do more complex skills, the frequency and duration of training increases to help ensure a sufficient amount of time on drills, skills strength and conditioning is spent. As they say, "you get out what you put in".
Teenagers - New to the sport? Teens can try out the recreational teens and adults' class or give the intermediate program a go. The coach will be able to advise of what pathway to continue on after this according to many elements like the tumblers goals and skill set.
Adults - if you'd like to try out tumbling, it is part of our adult gym sports class.
Competitions
Once you've mastered the basics, you can keep developing your skills for fun and fitness or challenge yourself through competitions.
Tumblers perform two passes demonstrating sequences of forward, backward and side ward skills, rotating from hands to feet and feet to feet.
Beginners in level 1 - 2 can compete in Southern Queensland or Central Queensland interclub, our Twist and Flip competitions when they are ready.
Intermediate Power Tumbling athletes can compete in suitable competitions and are invited to partake in club events.
Athletes in level 3A are eligible to compete at the QLD State Championships, whilst higher levels can compete at National and international events.
Tumbling is an age - inclusive sport and allows for children as young as 6 through to adults to compete.
Progression
At Maryborough GymSports we use the Trampoline Australian Levels Program to guide to skill level placement. It is imperative for safety that correct mastery of the basics is achieved before learning more advanced skills.
Levels 1 - 4 can be assessed/ levels tested at MGS by a suitably qualified judge. It can consist of club and competitive level skills, passes, combinations and routines. Level 5 and above must attend a sanctioned event in order to levels test and be signed off by the club coach in order to progress to the next level.
See more information about assessments and competitions here.
Complementary classes
All tumblers are able to participate in other classes at MGS to develop their strength, coordination and skills.
Cross Train with tumbling
Tumbling is recommended for all members as skills need to be solid on the floor before they progress to apparatus. For example, a handstand is learnt on the floor and then can be transferred to any piece of equipment like the beam, a bar or even a person!
Dancers may be interested in the benefits from the power tumbling class, which teaches acrobatic floor tricks like cartwheels, handstands, rolls, and eventually round offs, ariels, somersaults and handsprings.
In 2024 - we also have a Strength and Conditioning component for dancers, which will teach basic weightlifting, imperative for injury prevention for the 21st century dancer.
Give your child the right start in life. Let them experience Trampoline Sports and watch them flip their way to a happier, healthier life.
