Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG)

"Expressive and powerful skills on four apparatus"
This sport is a creative blend of daring and control; powerful yet refined, elegant yet strong. Mastery on the four apparatus requires skills that flip, balance, swing and soar.

Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG):

  • Enhances co-ordination and agility, for body awareness and balance

  • Develops posture and confident body movement, including the ability to land safely

  • Builds self-confidence, for sport and life

  • Develops strength and flexibility

  • Develops healthy minds and bodies for now and later life

  • Is taught by accredited coaches

Sessions - Check the timetable. As the gymnast progresses through the levels, training duration and frequency increases.

Pathways of Women's Artistic Gymnastics at Maryborough GymSports

In 2024 - there are some updates to our WAG program and streams. We will be offering WAG for recreational, cross training, development and competitive pathways from level 3.

WAG is suitable for:

Children - Beginners must have turned 6 to start in level 1 and goes for 90 minutes. See Lil' Gym for programs suitable for girls aged 6 and under.

Teenagers -

Beginner young ladies aged 14 and over may enjoy the recreational teens class if they're just starting out in gymnastics. If they'd like to slide over to the levels program for more training or to seek competitive pathways, this is upon discussion and approval from the head coach.

Adults - Ladies aged 18 and over are eligible for the adult program.

Classes:

Level 1 - where space, there may be an option to do 2 WAG sessions a week

Level 2 recommended to do 2 WAG sessions a week.

Updated in 2024 a class list with an allocation of required minimum hours below
Level 3 - Foundations (4hrs/week), Development (5hrs/week) and Competitive (9hrs/week).

Level 4 limited hours (6hrs / week) and competitive (10hrs / week)

Level 5 limited hours (8hrs / week) and competitive (12hrs / week)

As they say, "you get out what you put in", therefore if doing limited hours, the progress will be slower than someone else on competitive hours. Gymnastics is a sport that if wanting to excel to a high level, many hours each week needs to be invested over many years. This is for the safety of the gymnast.

Competitive athletes are working skills for their current level, but also building skills for the future and long-term development of being a competitive athlete.

Some classes are combined levels to ensure viability as MGS is only a small club.

Progressing
Athletes progress through the levels pathway according to their ability - not age.

Once you've learnt the basics, you can develop your skills for fun and fitness or challenge yourself further through competitions.

Levels program:

Levels 1 - 3 can levels test at MGS with a suitably qualified club judge. Level 4 onwards needs to attend a sanctioned competition in order to levels test.

Competition scores still allows for many technical errors from the gymnast, therefore the head coach has the final say whether the gymnast is ready to progress to the next level, or not. See mid year assessments and competition information for further details.

Teenagers and adults: May be able to levels test in house if they meet the requirements and transfer into the levels program upon discussion and approval from the coach and club.

Waiting list for WAG 1 - this is the fastest filling class at MGS!
Should there be no spaces available in the WAG 1 program, therefore children will be offered other programs, like rhythmic, tumbling or trampoline and be put on the WAG 1 waiting list until a space opens.

Complementary Classes

WAG is complemented by trampoline and tumbling. Many of our acrobats also find benefits in WAG too.

Transfer to MGS
Should the athlete be transferring to Maryborough GymSports from another club, evidence of levels passed will need to be provided to the office prior to enrollment.

Give your daughter the right start in life. Let her experience Women's Artistic Gymnastics and watch her grow into a happy, healthy and responsible young adult.
