Pathways of Men's Artistic Gymnastics at Maryborough GymSports

4 streams are available under the watchful eyes of 3 accredited MAG coaches in recreational, cross training and competitive classes.

Children - Beginners must have turned 6 to start in level 1 which goes for 60 minutes. See Lil' Gym for programs suitable for boys aged 6 and under.

Teenagers - Beginner young men aged 14 and over may enjoy the recreational teens class if they're just starting out in gymnastics. If they'd like to slide over to the levels program for more training or to seek competitive pathways, this is upon discussion and approval from the head coach.

Adults - Men aged 18 and over are eligible for the adult program.

Classes:
Recreational

This is the starting point for boys in the program with little to no gymnastics experience. Here they will learn the basic shapes and skills on each apparatus in a fast paced, engaging class. The classes focus on fitness, friendship and fundamentals.

If the athlete is excelling, they may be invited to the competition program.

Level 1 recreational - 60mins per week

f the athlete is excelling, they may be invited to the competition program.

Level 2 recreational - recommended to do x2 MAG sessions per week

This is the next step up for boys, where they continue to work on more skills on each apparatus.

Pre-competitive - by invite only - approx 5 - 6 hours per week

Competitive
For the boy who is excelling at the basics and has showed they'd be a suitable candidate for competitive MAG.  Emphasis is on execution of routines showing strength, control and flexibility.

Competitive athletes are working skills for their current level, but also building skills for the future and long-term development of being a competitive athlete.

MAG follows the Australian Levels Program where the skill difficulty increases with level, thus the training load will increase with each level too.

Level 1 and 2 competitive - minimum 6 hrs per week

Level 3 competitive - 9hrs minimum / week

In 2023 MGS re-entered the competitive MAG scene after a decade out. Competitive MAG is a fantastic supportive environment for boys to learn additional focus, attention to detail, confidence and responsibility.

How to progress?
The gymnast progresses through a series of levels according to their ability - not age. Beginners start in Level 1 and must have turned 6 to enrol in this class.

Recreational stream -  4 x 4 program
There are four levels of skills on the 6 apparatus. It is assessable within the club by the coach or a club judge.

Competitive stream - Australian Levels Program
Level 1 - 2 can be assessed in house.
Levels 3 and over must be assessed at a  sanctioned competition.

Competition scores still allows for many technical errors from the gymnast, therefore the head coach has the final say whether the gymnast is ready to progress to the next level, or not.

See mid year assessments and competition information for further details.

Complementary classes

All MAG boys are able to participate in other classes at MGS to develop their strength, coordination and skills. Trampoline Sports would be the most beneficial program followed by strength and conditioning.

When available, MAG participants may like to add the beginner or intermediate power tumbling class to spend additional time on their floor skills.

Cross Ttain with gymnastics to take your sports performance to the next level!
Take your sporting performance to the next level with gymnastics. It is the foundation of all sports. It is common for young football players to do gymnastics on the days they don't train to reap the many benefits like strength, mobility and learning to fall safely, all which are imperative to longevity and injury prevention.

Our newest MAG coach is a highly experienced exercise physiologist, so this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to get involved in MAG with such highly trained coaches!

Transfer to MGS

Athletes who are transferring to MGS need to show evidence from their former club of levels passed to be placed in a class suitable to their level.

Give your son the right start in life. Let him experience Men's Gymnastics and watch him develop into a strong, confident and happy young man!
