Pathways for Rhythmic Gymnastics at Maryborough GymSports

Rhythmic gymnastics is one of the newer programs at MGS, starting at holiday clinics since 2019 and opening in 2020 on a trial provision. In 2022, it was combined with dance and then finally in 2023, we were able to have a beginner and competitive pathway.

Beginners - Classes focus on fitness, friendship and fundamentals of rhythmic. Beginner R.G classes are held once a week and start at 60 minutes per session. Extension hours may be offered for those excelling. See Lil' Gym for programs suitable for children aged 6 and under.

What does a beginner R.G do?
Members learn the fundamentals on 5 apparatus (excluding clubs). They also do basic strength, conditioning and dance. At times they may use other equipment like trampoline, wall bars and climbing ropes.

Complementary classes

Classes like dance, artistic gymnastics or tumbling are recommended to assist in the athlete's progression.

How to progress?

The gymnast progresses through a series of levels according to their ability - not age. Beginners start in the beginner class (incorporating fundamental dance and equipment handling plus skills and routines from the Level 1 and 2 Australian Program. Level 1 and 2 is assessable within the club by the coach or a club judge for beginner recreational athletes.

Excelling members may be invited to try out the competition program.

Competitive - (by invite) - Like any competitive sport, rhythmic requires a commitment to train multiple times a week with the guise that they will train to pursue success in competitions. In 2023 Maryborough has its first competitive rhythmist who produced phenomenal results, coming in on a podium place at the 2023 QLD State Championships. You can check more on our Facebook videos page.

What does a competitive rhythmist do?
Members pursue refined excellence in their set routines as set by Gymnastics Queensland/Australia where the gymnast aims to showcase exemplary technique, expressive dance and control of the apparatus.

In classes, they do more intense dance, conditioning, tumbling and apparatus work. Subject to the time in the year, they are likely to working upgrades for future skill sets to aid in the long-term development of the competitive pathways.

Competitions

Competitive R.G does at times require travelling away to competitions in the SEQ area. As we are a regional club, there is an allowance for a video submission of routines to the judges.

Excelling girls can train to reach qualification scores to enter into prestigious competitions like the QLD State Championships (upon qualification).

Complementary classes

These athletes are requested to do other classes that assist in the athlete's development in the sport e.g. Dance, strength and conditioning and/or tumbling. The coach will be able to advise of what enrolment pattern on a case - by - case analysis.

How to progress?

Levels 3 and above must be assessed at a sanctioned competition by suitably qualified judges, receive a passing score and be signed off by the club coach to progress to the next level.
